The problem of reconciling freedom and necessity, that is individual consciousness with the entirety of Being, human creative and authentic existence with the absolute significance conferred upon it by the cosmic order of becoming, the human will existing within the temporal order with the infinite dimension that eternalizes the individual, is undoubtedly one of the central dilemmas of modernity. It has permeated its history at least since the time of Rousseau, through the Jena Romantics and German Idealism, and was eventually taken up by the great philosopher and cultural analyst Friedrich Nietzsche. This issue spectacularly resonates within the framework of Nietzsche’s key ideas, such as the eternal return and the will to power. This topic is thoroughly addressed in Marcin Dżugaj’s book The Problem of Freedom and Necessity in Nietzsche’s Philosophy. Nietzsche and the German Tradition of Pantheistic Mysticism ([Problem wolności i konieczności w filozofii Nietzschego. Nietzsche wobec tradycji niemieckiej mistyki panteistycznej], 2023). This article aims to examine the contents and highlight the value of Dżugaj’s work, while also pointing out possible additions, corrections, and engaging in a dialogue with the author.
