Abstract

The purpose of the article is to highlight a role of the landscape in recent Spanish cinema with a rural theme. The analysis of twenty-one feature films and documentaries from 2012–2023 demonstrates transformation of the cinematic representation of the countryside. The landscape serves as a mirror of contemporary changes taking place in rural areas, but also as a symbol of regional identity. The new rural cinema is far away from postcard views. Instead, what draws attention is the dominance of the intimate landscapes, which are strongly connected to the personal experiences and daily lives of the characters. At the same time, film locations are often the directors’ little homelands, which are presented both free of idealisation of the rural world and full of longing for their disappearing form.
