Tekst analizuje znaczenie wyobrażenia kolumn w insygniach późnorzymskiego dowódcy wojskowego comes limitis Aegypti, zachowanych w Notitia dignitatum pars Orientis 28. Wszystkie zachowane wersje rejestru, sporządzonego około 400 r. i uzupełnianego najdalej do lat trzydziestych V w., są kopiami zaginionego prawie w całości manuskryptu Codex Spirensis z czasów karolińskich. W tekście uwzględniono wszystkie wersje insygniów komesa Egiptu, zachowane w kopiach pierwotnych tego kodeksu. Insygnia Notitia dignitatum wizualizują kompetencje dygnitarzy późnorzymskich i ich pozycję w ramach administracji imperium późnorzymskiego. Insygnia comes limitis Aegypti są wyjątkowe, gdyż jako jedyne w Notitia dignitatum zawierają wyobrażenia signa militaria jednostek wojskowych. Umieszczone one zostały na kolumnach wzniesionych nad wyobrażeniami ‘fortów’, symbolizującymi najważniejsze jednostki armii rzymskiej podległe comes limitis Aegypti. Autor wnioskuje, że zamieszczenie wyobrażeń kolumn, szczególnie dokładnie przedstawionych w części kopii, było konsekwencją niezrozumienia symboliki signa militaria przez ilustratorów kopii Codex Spirensis. W konsekwencji wyobrażenie kolumn w insygniach comes limitis Aegypti należy traktować jako pozbawiony znaczenia element dekoracyjny
