Abstract

The article analyzes cinematic representations of artificial intelligence in twenty–first–century cinema from a relational perspective, focusing on the question of social readiness to transfer emotional needs from interpersonal relationships to technology. Based on an analysis of Her (2013), directed by Spike Jonze, and Archive (2020), directed by Gavin Rothery, the study identifies two tendencies: artificial intelligence as a relational substitute and as a form of compensation and prosthesis for relationships. The article demonstrates how narrative strategies normalize or problematize technologically mediated intimacy understood as a remedy for human loneliness. The findings indicate that relationships with AI may temporarily co–constitute identity and the experience of closeness, yet remain limited and context–dependent. The analyzed films do not negate the significance of interpersonal relationships but instead make them a point of reference for reflection on the boundaries of technological relationality.
