Method of preparing texts

Authors should ensure that their manuscript meets all editorial requirements. Articles that do not comply with the specified criteria may be rejected.

Guidelines in accordance with the European Accessibility Act (EAA)

Authors are requested to prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the following structural and formatting guidelines. This facilitates the editorial process and ensures consistency across all texts published in Saeculum Christianum.

The journal accepts only original manuscripts in Polish, English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. Submissions must not have been previously published in any language and must not be under review simultaneously by another journal.

Authors are required to use the official Saeculum Christianum Word template when preparing their manuscripts: TEMPLATE

Before preparing the manuscript, authors are requested to carefully read these guidelines and familiarize themselves with the template.

1. TEXT FORMATTING (Basic Guidelines)

  • File format: Microsoft Word (.docx).
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt.
  • Line spacing: 1.5.
  • Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides.
  • Bold should be used only for emphasis in the main text and for headings (in accordance with the template).
  • Italics should be used only for the titles of cited works and foreign-language expressions.

Please DO NOT use:

  • manual tab stops for text alignment,
  • non-breaking spaces to control line breaks,
  • manual line breaks (Shift+Enter) to force the end of a line,
  • manual adjustments to letter spacing or the deletion of individual characters at the ends of lines.

Standard Microsoft Word tools should be used for paragraphs, lists, headings, and tables.

Heading Hierarchy

For section and subsection titles, authors should use the built-in Microsoft Word heading styles:

  • Heading 1 – titles of the main sections of the article.
  • Heading 2 – subsections (e.g., “2.1. ...”).
  • Heading 3 – sub-subsections, where necessary.

Headings should not be created by manually changing the font size or by using bold formatting alone.

2. MANUSCRIPT LENGTH AND STRUCTURE

  • Maximum length:
    The manuscript, including the abstract, main text, bibliography, and all statements and declarations, must not exceed 40,000 characters including spaces.

  • Authors should follow the structure specified in the official template. A typical research article should include:

    1. Title
    2. Author(s), affiliation, ORCID, and e-mail address
    3. Abstract (800 characters, including spaces)
    4. Keywords (3-5)
    5. Introduction
    6. Section 2 – Main body of the article
    7. Section 3 – Results and/or discussion
    8. Conclusion
    9. Statements and declarations
    10. Bibliography
    11. Appendix (if required)

If it is necessary to present extensive data (e.g., large tables, additional figures), these materials should be placed in an Appendix, which must be referenced in the main text.

3. ABSTRACT AND KEYWORDS

Abstract

  • Length: 800 characters.
  • The abstract should briefly present:
    • the background and rationale of the study,
    • the main research objective,
    • the methods applied,
    • the key findings,
    • the principal conclusions.
  • The abstract must accurately reflect the content of the article and must not exaggerate the significance of the results.
  • Citations and rarely used abbreviations should be avoided in the abstract.

Keywords and SDGs

  • Please provide 3-5 keywords.
  • Keywords should be specific to the article while also being widely used within the relevant discipline to facilitate indexing and retrieval.

4. FIGURES, TABLES, AND ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

In accordance with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and relevant accessibility regulations, Saeculum Christianum requires that all graphical elements be accessible to persons with disabilities. This applies to both figures (photographs, drawings, diagrams, maps, charts, logos, etc.) and tables.

4.1. Figures (Content, Files, and Alternative Text)

  • Figures should be numbered consecutively: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, ...
  • Each figure included in the manuscript must have:
    • a title placed below the figure,
    • source information, where applicable.

Graphic files to be uploaded to the submission platform

In addition to figures embedded in the manuscript file:

  • Each figure must be uploaded to the journal platform as a separate high-resolution image file (e.g., JPG, PNG, or another standard graphic format) together with the manuscript submission.
  • Files should be named clearly and according to their order of appearance in the text, for example: Figure-1, Figure-2, Figure-3 (a short descriptor may be added, e.g., Figure-1-map).

Charts in editable format

  • If figures consist of charts or diagrams prepared in Microsoft Excel, they must also be provided as an editable Excel file.
  • All charts should be placed in a single Excel file and uploaded to the submission system together:
    • with the manuscript,
    • and with the separate image files.

Alternative text for figures

To comply with accessibility requirements, each figure must have a short alternative text (alt text) that can be read by screen readers.

For Saeculum Christianum, authors should not insert alternative text directly into the figure properties within the manuscript file. Instead:

  • a separate Word document should be prepared;
  • all figures should be listed in the order in which they appear in the manuscript;
  • for each figure, first provide its full title, followed on the next line by the alternative text.

Example format:

Figure 1. Full title of the figure
Alternative text: ...

Figure 2. Full title of the figure
Alternative text: ...

Guidelines for Preparing Alternative Text

  • Alternative text should be concise and informative (usually 1-3 sentences).
  • It should explain what the figure shows and why it is important to the article.
  • The description should include the key information available to a sighted reader, such as the main objects, relationships, variables, axes, units, trends, and principal comparisons.
  • For charts and diagrams, the alternative text should:
    • identify the variables shown on the axes;
    • provide the units of measurement (where applicable);
    • indicate the time period covered (if relevant);
    • briefly describe the main trend or comparison (e.g., which group has the highest value).
  • Alternative text must be consistent with the content of the article and factually accurate.

Alternative text is essential to ensure that blind, visually impaired, and deafblind readers have access to the same information as sighted readers.

4.2. Tables and Brief Descriptions

  • Tables should be numbered consecutively: Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, etc.
  • Each table must include:
    • a title placed above the table,
    • a brief description placed between the table title and the table itself.

The brief description (1-3 sentences) should:

  • concisely indicate what type of data is presented;
  • identify the main columns and, where applicable, the units of measurement;
  • highlight the most important pattern, difference, or trend (e.g., which group has the highest mean value, how values change over time, or how they differ across scenarios).

Such descriptions are required for both accessibility and clarity purposes. They facilitate a quick understanding of table contents, including for readers who use assistive technologies.

5. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS ACCEPTED FOR SUBMISSION

Saeculum Christianum accepts the following types of manuscripts:

  • Research articles – original scholarly contributions that fall within the scope of the journal.
  • Source editions – these should include an abstract and keywords.
  • Reports – reports on important conferences, research projects, or scholarly events directly related to the activities of the Faculty of History of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (UKSW).

  • The Editorial Board of Saeculum Christianum requires authors to prepare submitted manuscripts in accordance with the editorial guidelines available at: Saeculum Christianum Editorial Guidelines.

  • The manuscript must conclude with a Bibliography section that:

    • includes all and only the sources cited in the text;
    • is arranged alphabetically by authors’ surnames;
    • follows a consistent order of bibliographic elements (author, year, title, publication details) and applies italics and punctuation consistently throughout.

DOIs and URLs

  • Many scholarly articles are assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier).
  • A DOI should be presented as a persistent URL beginning with the format: https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxx.
  • Whenever a DOI is available, authors should provide it in this format at the end of the bibliographic reference. Such DOI links are preferred over long, database-specific URLs (e.g., JSTOR or ScienceDirect links).
  • For sources without a DOI, authors may provide a short, stable URL directing readers to the journal, book, or repository where the material is available. Alternatively, the URL may be omitted if the source is a standard print publication.

7. ETHICAL AND LEGAL STATEMENTS

At the end of the manuscript (before the Bibliography), authors must include a section entitled Statements, containing the following subsections, as applicable to the nature of the research:

Authorship

For multi-authored articles, a short paragraph specifying the contribution of each author must be included. Please use the template below, replacing X.X., Y.Y., and Z.Z. with the authors’ initials:
