Abstract

This article discusses the importance of catechesis addressed to parents of first-communion
children as an opportunity to deepen their relationship with the parish and to better involve
young married couples in the life of the parish community. It is stressed that in order to
strengthen the parents’ witness of faith catechesis should be a space for dialogue and not
just a form of conveying formal knowledge. Parents are very important participants in the
catechetical process, but contemporary cultural and social challenges sometimes hinder
the transmission of faith. Parish catechesis therefore can become a school of faith where
families can deepen their understanding of the Eucharist. The article also highlights the
need to prepare catechists for modern and dynamic forms of work that include community
support by organising catechetical meetings integrating families and building new
relationships within the parish.
