Abstract

The paper discusses the initiation into the Sacrament of Reconciliation within the method
of Catholic Religious Education (CRE) called Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which is
based on the theology of Sofia Cavalletti and on the assumptions of Maria Montessori’s
pedagogy. Confession is presented in the context of the covenant between God and human
considered in terms of man’s dialogue with God. Cavalletti, following St. Augustine,
identifies three aspects of reconciliation as a prayerful dialogue. These are the prayer of
repentance, the prayer of petition, and the prayer of praise. A similar approach is presented
by Cardinal Carlo M. Martini. This is followed by the presentation of the basic catechetical
issues offered to children aged 3–6 and 6–9 years old, aimed at introducing them into the
experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation by the use of selected biblical metaphors. In
conclusion, the voice of Joseph Ratzinger – Pope Benedict XVI broadens the perspective
indicating the opportunities and challenges currently facing adult catechesis and initiation
into the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
