Abstract

The custom of general communion for children aged 11 was introduced in the diocese of
Płock Bishop A.J. Nowowiejski in the second decade of the 20th century. He was associated
with the children’s large catechism, which meant the completion of basic religious education.
It remained after World War II for children at the level of the fourth grade of primary
school. In 1984, he was modified by giving it a new theological dimension in the form of
solemn renewal of promises declared during the baptism. Currently, this custom remains
the only tradition of the Płock diocese. Considering the need to introduce a mystagogical
catechesis for children after the First Holy Communion, and positive experiences in this
field in the Płock diocese should be adopted creatively in all Polish dioceses.
