Abstract

In the 1900s, many societies, unions and organisations were formed in the Russian partition
zone bringing together representatives of various professions in their ranks. One such
group was comprised of prefect priests involved in teaching religion at school. In order to
improve their qualifications and the effectiveness of their catechetical work, they formed
an organisation operating as a section of the Polish Teachers’ Association. It was the first
of its kind, created for priests being RE teachers and operating in the Kingdom of Poland
with a national reach. It carried out its activities in many forms and, despite being active
for a rather short time, between 1906 and 1908, it became the nucleus of an association of
prefect priests which fully developed its activities in all dioceses in the reborn Poland after
independence was restored in 1918.
