Abstract

The feeling of loneliness experienced by young children and adolescents emerges as a social
issue with its sources, dynamics and consequencies in the social background and the
mode of the upbringing of children. A wide range of definitions is brought together to
show the diversity and the causes of social disorders that the young generation is exposed
to. The authors point to healthy family relations, pre-school and school education, belonging
to various groups and communities as well as taking part in social initiatives as
the meaningful factors leading to the development of social competence in children and
adolescents. Finally, empathy and altruism are recognised as the traits characterizing
high social competence.
