Abstract

The author analyzes and interprets the films of Polish documentary filmmaker Andrzej Brzozowski, which he describes as “landscapes after the battle.” The documentary filmmaker reveals the palimpsest nature of the open space shown in them by pointing out traces of the past hidden in the landscape. His approach can be compared to the work of an archaeologist uncovering the truth about the past history of a given place hidden beneath the surface of the earth. Landscapes after the Battle deal with two groups of films. The first contains documentaries made mainly in the 1960s that are devoted to the Holocaust. The second includes films shot during the Vietnam War in the 1970s. Limiting the role of the word in film narration and often abandoning it altogether in favor of emphasizing the visual side is also characteristic of Brzozowski’s films.
