Abstract

The essay analyzes the representation of the Polish crisis between September 1980 and December 1981 in the pages of Corriere della Sera, reconstructing how Italy’s leading newspaper reported on the recognition of Solidarność, the crisis of the Polish United Workers’ Party (POUP), and the imposition of martial law. The article highlights the role of Sandro Scabello’s reports, the variety of contributors, and the breadth of interpretations offered to readers. Through a selected corpus of articles, editorials, and commentaries, it shows how the Polish events were understood not only as an international issue but also as a symbol of the contradictions of real socialism and as a mirror through which to interrogate the dilemmas of the West at a time when political and ideological identities were being redefined.
