Abstract

Among the countless prints published by the publishing house of the brothers Joseph Sebastian (1700–1768) and Johann Baptist (1712–1787) Klauber in Augsburg, a large-format series of four saints juxtaposed with the four elements stands out. Each composition is a visual “treatise” on the negative effects and positive aspects of an element. The heavenly intercessor depicted in the extended central part of the composition was a protector during the raging elements: Florian of fire, Francis Xavier of sea storms, Alexius of Rome of earthquakes, and Sebastian of plague air. Several genre scenes and biblical episodes take place around, illustrating the multi-faceted manifestations of an element.

The preparatory drawings for the series of prints were made by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner (1702/1712–1761).
