Abstract

Inclusive research is a concept encompassing various forms of participation of co-researchers with disabilities in the implementation of the research process. Co-researchers can undertake a variety of roles and activities ranging from advising on the issues or the way in which the research should be carried out, to participating in all stages, including the dissemination of results. An important element preceding the process of inclusive research seems to be the appropriate training of people with intellectual disabilities to be co-researchers, based on a program using activating methods and materials accessible to people with intellectual disabilities in easy-to-read text. It is important to introduce the content necessary to learn about the research process and its various components, considering both the strengths and the cognitive and communication limitations of the trainees. The aim of this article is to present and analyze our own experience of preparing people with intellectual disabilities from the Lubelskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeships to act as co-researchers. It discusses recommendations and advantages, but also risks and difficulties, in preparing this group of people to participate in inclusive research.
