Abstract

The pedagogy of religion is a sub-discipline set apart in the field of social sciences, in the
discipline of pedagogy. It has many points of contact with theology and the sciences of
upbringing. The analyses undertaken in this article are based on the scientific work of Fr
Zbigniew Marek SJ. They aim to show the contemporary understanding of the pedagogy
of religion in the view of this Author. Therefore, firstly the understanding of the pedagogy
of religion and its relation to catechetics adopted by him is presented. Then, the issues undertaken
by Fr. Prof. Z. Marek SJ concerning the methodological status of the pedagogy
of religion were analysed. Appreciating the author’s contribution to the development of
this scientific sub-discipline, attention was paid to the anthropological-philosophical
foundations of the pedagogy of religion and its object, sources, and methods. The objectives
of the pedagogy of religion are also indicated. They focus on the theory and practice of

religious education, religious upbringing, moral upbringing, formation, and spirituality,
conditioned by socio-cultural factors, and opening up the pupils to transcendence and
supporting them in reaching maturity. They find concretisation in creating pedagogical
currents and concepts inspired by religion.
