For some time now, it has been quite clear that there has been a decreasing interest in
the sacrament of confirmation and in preparing for it by young people. An even greater
problem seems to be the resignation from participation in the life of the Church by those
who have received this sacrament. This prompts us to look for the reasons for this state of
affairs and to consider how to improve the situation. This study is an attempt to answer
the question of what to do so that receiving the sacrament of confirmation does not simultaneously
mean leaving the Church by young people. It proposes reflection according to
the following key: how it is, how it should be, why it is not as it should be and what should
be done to make it as it should be?
It is necessary to convince young people even more about the importance of this gift in their
lives, and also to revive the responsibility of the Church community – the parish for their
preparation. Catholic parents, godparents, as well as priests and catechists have a huge task
to fulfill. It is essential to follow the guidelines developed by the Church in Poland, which
concern this preparation. Both parish preparation for confirmation and school religious
education, as well as family catechesis, require consideration. Much attention has been
paid to mystagogy as a liturgical formation in preparation for confirmation.
