Abstract

Joseph E. LeDoux’s book, – The Four Realms of Existence: A New Theory of Being Human (2023) – is an attempt to redefine human nature. Drawing on his own „mosaic of being” model, the author seeks an answer to the question „What are we like?” He endeavours to newly describe human existence, grounding it in four spheres of being: the biological, the neurobiological, the cognitive, and the sphere of consciousness – on the basis of which he attempts to explain the problem of consciousness. Four Kinds of Existence is an accessible, well-written, and richly informative book that offers a compelling and worthwhile reflection on the mind, its evolutionary roots, and the limits of the reductionist approach employed in the philosophy of mind.
