Abstract

The subject of the article is the role of terrestrial and extraterrestrial landscapes in space documentaries. In the first part of the text, following Emmanuel Carrère’s definition of the landscape film, the author shows the interpretive possibilities offered by linking reflections on space documentaries with reflections on the nature of cinematic and serial landscapes. Then, drawing on the work of Elizabeth Kessler and other scholars, she discusses the relationship of space documentaries to the category of the cosmic sublime. The final part of the article is exploratory. The author identifies areas where the study of the cinematic landscape can fruitfully merge with the study of astroculture as understood by Alexander C.T. Geppert.
