Abstract

The article is devoted to the drawing from the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. The composition depicts Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, and Thomas Aquinas, who overcomes the personification of heresy. The ideological message of the work aligns with the Counter-Reformation polemics of the Church against non-Catholics, emphasizing the orthodoxy of Catholic dogmas and highlighting the key religious charisms of the Jesuits: combating heresy and fulfilling Christ’s missionary command (Matt. 28:19). In addition to discussing the iconography of the saints, the author examines the connections between the Jesuits, the Dominicans, and St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as his teachings, which have served as the foundation of clerical education since the Council of Trent.
