Abstract

This article deals with the work of Robert William Jenson, who strove to practice a theology that was as ecumenically open as possible. The legacy of the Lutheran theologian also includes issues that are important for Catholic doctrine. The aim of this article is to present a theological-systematic justification of apostolic succession. The author of the text finds the relationship between ecclesiological doctrine and the doctrine of Scripture most interesting in Jenson’s legacy. The article demonstrates the relationship of ecclesiastical office with the normative role of the biblical canon, including the service performed by the Magisterium regarding the written word of God. It also articulates Jenson’s conviction that apostolic succession and Scripture are a necessary condition for maintaining the Church’s diachronic communion with the apostolic beginning and with the Church’s glorious fulfilment in the life of the Triune God.
