The Constitution of the Person According to Edmund Husserl

Abstract

This article examines the steps of the process of becoming a person according to Husserl. It shows the main characteristics and phases of the process. Becoming a person is a special kind of commitment that requires perseverance, remaining faithful to the chosen directions of action and values. Self-reflection is also a constitutive factor, as it indicates the directions of action, goals and values, it enables the full realization of one’s own potential. Husserl showed in detail the dynamics of becoming a person responsible for oneself and others, and thus a moral subject. His account combines all the features of the classical concept of a person into a coherent whole. In the conclusion, I pose the question: should we speak of a departure from the tradition-bound notion of a person?
