Abstract

Employee participation is an important trend in modern market organization. It takes two forms: capital and managerial. The former includes profit sharing, stake ownership (collective or individual), stock options. Managerial participation (concerning company long-term goals and investment preferences) is institutionalized in work councils, work teams, employee involvement committees as well as in trade unions. Both forms of employee participation are designed as mechanisms of increasing commitment and work motivation of the company crew, which may be viewed as a modern form of the human relation movement dating back to the twentieth and thirties of the last century. The economic participation of employees does not just change their income relations but also their ownership positions. Two types of ownership are distinguished in the paper: ownership of the means of production (machines, raw materials, buildings, money capital) and work power. Unlike in the traditionally organized company, where external stake holders and managers are owners of the means of production (manufacturing, trade or services), in the type of employee participation company appears third owner: the employees as a group different from the managers. Their work power is a subject of partly private and partly collective ownership. They are also a collective co-owner of the company capital. The other owners are the company managers and (in some but not all cases) external stake holders. This structure of ownership relations makes a new mode of economic organization that may (provisionally) be called participant mode of production.
