In 1966 was celebrated in Poland the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of the Prince Mieszko. This event is commonly regarded as a symbolic beginning of Polish statehood. The political situation in Poland after World War II meant that the Roman Catholic Church organized its own religious celebrations (under the name: Millennium of the Baptism of Poland), and separate secular ceremonies were conducted by state authorities (under the name: Millennium of the Polish State).
Research on the design of jewellery, haberdashery, souvenirs, etc., which were related to state celebrations, lead to interesting conclusions. Jewellery referring directly to the events of 966 or the Slavic (possibly: pro-to-Slavic) tradition is a small group. Haberdashery products (mainly metal plates, shields, etc.) were much more numerous – they featured images of the Polish coat of arms – the White Eagle, often marked with the coats of arms of cities and regions or with an appropriate inscription. However, the most numerous were small commemorative badges from mass tours organized by the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society.
These trips were organized for all groups of Poles, and their aim was to learn more about the history and culture of Poland.
