Nearly 40 years since the completion of the first two volumes from the series „Iconography of modern church art in Poland” under the scientific editorship of Fr. Prof. Janusz St. Pasierb. The author of the text looks at the recent phenomenon: the decoration of figurines of Mary in ways that diverge from the traditional representation of the Immaculata. Her analysis does not focus on the kitsch effect, i.e., repeating Fr. Prof. Michał Janocha, „ridiculous sublimity” or „sublime ridiculousness”, but on the cause and purpose. By reviewing the works of Paulina Mazur, Olga Jackowska / Kora, Weronika Leczkowska, Sylwia Grześkiewicz, and Aleksandra Sikorska — artists who have given their creations intellectual depth — the author proposes the thesis that the figurines they embellish, which sometimes exhibit elements of subversion, clearly remain on the periphery of mainstream feminist art. Nonetheless, this phenomenon undoubtedly serves as a means through which, by reworking the image and imbuing it with new meanings, the Virgin Mary becomes more relatable and personally significant to these artists.
