Abstract

The article focuses on landscape transformation as an important element of film noir iconography offering analyses of a variety of crime procedurals made in different countries and on different continents. The titles, which include Trapped, The Killing, The Thaw and 42 Days of Darkness, have also not been popular among the viewers of streaming platforms, but won critical acclaim as well as numerous awards. Recently, these productions have been employing a new type of landscape. Here, the urban jungle does not seem to be a unique crime scene any longer. Remote cities and provincial towns surrounded by infinite lakes, fjords, bays, and marshes are frequently utilized to raise existential fears. New landscapes carry the worldview and ideological background typical of film noir and by providing the setting of action they function primarily either as metaphors, or act independently becoming catalysts for events.
