Abstract

The article is devoted to two foundations of Kazimierz Leon Sapieha, the Lithuanian court marshal and the Lithuanian deputy chancellor: his residence in Różana (Pужаны) and the tombstone of his brother, Jan Stanisław Sapieha, in the church of St. Michael in Vilnius. Both monuments were mentioned in Polish, Lithuanian, and Belarusian literature, but so far there are no exact archival sources that would shed light on the circumstances of their creation. In the case of the palace in Różana, Polish researchers were not sure what the original residence of Sapieha was really like. Reconstruction of its spatial layout is possible thanks to the preserved project, which illustrates the appearance of the building before the beginning of the 18th century. The spatial layout of the building referred to Italian and French residential architecture. The solutions used in the construction in the form of a highly characteristic staircase were introduced in the avant-corps of the structure, indicating the authorship of Giovanni Battista Gisleni, among whose designs the ones that inspired the layout of Sapieha managed to pass. In the system of preserved accounts, the masonry equipment of the inner palace was made by the Wilhelm Richter's workshop team, e.g., Kacper Gunther. Based on a formal analysis and the source, which was also found, it is possible to link the tombstone of Jan Stanisław Sapieha in Vilnius with Richter.
