Abstract

Thanks to the courtesy of Sister Teresa Kunderewicz of the Resurrectionist Congregation, a legacy from the estate of the late Professor Cezary Kunderewicz (1912-1990) has now reached the Department of Roman Law at the University of Łódź. Professor Kunderewicz was Head of the Department from 1961 until his retirement in 1982. The earlier publications on the life and work of this outstanding Polish papyrologist, expert on cuneiform laws, historian of antiquity and scholar of Roman law have focused primarily on his research achievements. This study depicts his special gift for promoting scholarship to the general public. Professor Kunderewicz was a highly proficient author of elegant and intelligently composed, light and easy books on academic subjects designed for a general readership, despite all the adverse circumstances which made the task a well-nigh hopeless endeavour. This article presents this branch of Professor Kunderewicz’s work, as most of his general interest books and articles are practically inaccessible nowadays.

Keywords:
