Abstract

This study determines the variability of selected graphometric features of Jacek Malczewski’s signatures on his oil paintings. Jacek Malczewski was one of the most influential artists of the Młoda Polska (Young Poland) period in Polish art history (ca. 1890-1918). His works often appear on the art market and generate a great deal of interest among collectors and connoisseurs. This comparative corpus of signatures collected from his paintings may be helpful in the future for the verification of the authenticity of artworks that bear Malczewski’s signature. It will be a crucial measure in view of the constant problem of fakes circulating on the Polish art market. The basis for this research is the premise that forensic analysis of handwriting on documents, i.e. the comparative graphic method, may be applied to an artist’s signature. Out of all the features analysed in this paper using this method, I have chosen to focus on the features of the inscription area, especially the proportions of the letters and their relative angles of inclination.
