Abstract

This paper is on an inscription made by the city of Ephesus in tribute to the Emperor Hadrian, praising him as its founder and saviour. There were numerous inscriptions dedicated to Hadrian in the Greek East, but the remarkable feature of this one is that it gives the motives for the specific honours it enumerates. The citizens of Ephesus express gratitude for the privileges Hadrian granted to Artemis of Ephesus, the importation of grain from Egypt, and the renovation of the ports of Ephesus, which enabled the city to function as a major trading centre until the end of Antiquity.
