Abstract

Environmental pollution on a global scale, the rapid degradation of ecosystems and the loss of plant and animal biodiversity are prompting the search for new and more effective conservation mechanisms. This paper looks at the innovative regulation on the dignity of animals in Swiss law. I have used a comparative methodology to discuss legal provisions pertaining to another country’s systemic and legal conditions, and to supplement my dogmatic analysis. My observations show that animals have a value of their own which is associated with the ontological and axiological aspects of life. In Swiss law, the concept of animal dignity is a valid principle applicable in bioengineering and genetic research. In the light of the universal sense of animal dignity, this article proposes a broader understanding of the concept which goes beyond laboratory research.
