Abstract

In 1945, Jan Stanislaw Łoś, formerly a landowner and diplomat in pre-war Poland, was appointed to the post of lecturer in ancient history at the Catholic University of Lublin. His estate had been confiscated by the Communist authorities, so he had to find a new source of income. His impressive educational qualifications in the humanities made him an excellent lecturer: his essays on ancient history were very popular with readers. However, the University wanted an appointee with qualifications to hold a professorship, which meant a candidate with a post-doctoral habilitation degree. Łoś made two abortive attempts to obtain this degree. On the second occasion, he was supported by the eminent legal historian and papirologist Rafał (aka Raphael) Taubenschlag, but it turned out that Łoś neither wanted to give up writing his beautiful prose nor showed the slightest interest in devoting his time to dreary studies that could bring him recognition in the academic world.
