Abstract

The extant passage of the municipal act known as the lex Osca Tabulae Bantinae is an example of Roman policy on the primitive cultures of southern Italy. The Romans kept the language and local customs but introduced Roman legal regulations, which provided the grounds for the organization and operations of local municipalities. The history of this act is also an example of how legal texts were edited and written at the turn of the first and second centuries AD.

Keywords:

municipal act; original peoples of Italy; Roman law; expansion of Roman culture.
