Abstract

In a notorious case that occurred in the mid–1820s in Lithuania, Benedykt Puciłowski had his licence to appear in court as a legal representative revoke after he had called an ukase "barbarous". Puciłowski's rather offhand remark led to the Russian authorities deciding to censor attorners' writings. The official correspondence preserved in the vilnius collections sheds light on the way these regulations were drafet.
