Abstract

The Civico Museo Archeologico in Milan holds a rare sarcophagus belonging to Caius Valerius Petronianus, a young lawyer who died at the age of twenty-three. This exhibit is very important for research on Roman law because there are very few images of jurists in ancient art. The sarcophagus is decorated with pictorial narratives showing the key episodes in the life of this Milanese lawyer. We see him both at leisure and during his activities in court. This visual material is an important supplement to what the written sources tell us about the daily life of not so well-known Roman jurists.
