Abstract

The Order of Canons Regular of Lateran in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth built up a Congregation that was governed by a hierarchical monastic authority. Administrative documents were an indispensable tool for enforcing it, creating an efficient information and communication flow, and ultimately building the identity of the community. They allowed for the registration and verification of multifaceted data on the functioning of individual establishments. One of the most important ecclesiastical historical sources are the monastic visitations. Records of visitations of canons’ churches and monasteries from the years 1782–1861, due to the time and circumstances of their creation, their chronological and territorial scope, are a document that deserves the interest of researchers in the field of history of art, dealing with sacral architecture, painting, sculpture, goldsmithery, liturgical vestments, etc. of churches and monasteries in the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
